The last 100 metres of the approach to the house is down a rough, unsurfaced track. Past Pout Howe’s gate, a driveway leads to a traditional porch. The house is surrounded by front and back gardens which boast a small orchard a stream and a tree swing.

The front door opens into a cosy living/dining room with a wood burning stove, two sofas and a table that seats eight. The family keeps a wide range of books throughout the house. There is a telephone on which UK-only calls may be made. Please put £1 per 10 minutes in the honesty box.

The rustic kitchen has an oil fired AGA - a fantastic cooking machine which also helps to warm the house and provides a place to dry out your wet walking gear. An AGA cookbook is supplied! There is also an electric cooker, a fridge and a microwave. There is not much storage space in the kitchen but there is still a large stone larder which provides perfect cold storage. There is also a washing machine and a downstairs toilet.

A second sitting room leads off the kitchen. The extension was added to the house in 1970 and has magnificent panoramic views of the valley. There is a wood block floor, a piano, a double sofa bed and a smaller dining table.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a bathroom. One bedroom has twin beds, one has a double bed and one is a 'family' room, with a double bed, a single bed. There is also a travel cot. Including the sofa bed in the 'new room' the house sleeps nine plus a baby. Bear in mind, though, that there is only one bathroom.

Heating is by night storage heaters, the woodburing stove and, of course, the AGA. Water is heated on off-peak electricity. There is always hot water in the mornings and there is a boost switch on the immersion heater which can be activated whenever you like, but we do ask for £1 in the honesty box for every hour of boost. AGA fuel, logs and electricity are all included in the rent. There are duvets for all the beds but if you want to use the sofa bed then please take your own bedding. You will also need to take your own bedlinen, towels, tea towels and so on.

Pout Howe is a non-profit making business and all rents are used to maintain the house and road, pay for electricity, oil, logs, insurance and so on. There is a cleaner however we do need you to leave the house as you would wish to find it. We replenish cleaning materials from time to time but you may need to add to these.
